How to Identify Which Materials to Put Under Kanban: from Theory to Practice, Download Our Automated Template

One of the most frequently asked questions when talking about Kanban is:
“Which materials are suitable for this type of management?”

Not all codes are suitable to be managed in PULL mode according to Lean principles.
Choosing without a clear criterion often leads to mistakes, regardless of the quality of the tools being used (MRP, e-Kanban).

To answer this question objectively, in the KanbanRocket methodology we use the ABC-RRS matrix, which combines value and consumption frequency of materials, enabling a scientific classification of each code.

If you are not yet familiar with the ABC-RRS matrix, we recommend you first read the dedicated article here.

Do you want a copy of the template and a usage guide?

To make this evaluation easier, we have created an automated Excel template that:

  • Automatically calculates ABC and RRS classes
  • Generates the matrix and suggests a recommended strategy for each code

How to use the analysis results

Once the matrix has been generated, each code is positioned in one of the ABC-RRS cells.

At that point, you can decide whether the material is suitable for PULL management (Kanban with digital e-Kanban tools like KanbanRocket) or whether it should remain under PUSH logic (e.g., MRP for spot or forecast-based orders).
